School Leadership

Mrs. Mattie Hughes, Principal
I am honored to serve as principal of Jefferson Elementary school! I am excited to be surrounded by great students, a fantastic staff, and parents who want the best for their children!
Unlike many who always knew they wanted to teach, my path wasn’t so clear or linear. I didn’t set out knowing this would be my calling. For a long time, I was uncertain about my career. But when I look back, every job and experience had one common thread—I was always working with young people. It was as if my heart knew before my mind did.
I became a teacher because I believe in the power of presence. Every child deserves someone who sees them—not just for who they are, but for who they can become. Someone who believes in their potential, challenges them to grow, and walks beside them with care and conviction. Teaching is more than a profession—it’s a calling. It’s the chance to change the trajectory of a child’s life, to plant seeds of confidence, curiosity, and hope. And for me, there’s no greater purpose than that.
Fun Fact: When I am not at Jefferson, I enjoy traveling and visiting new place. Also, spending time with my husband, two children, and other family members. Family is very important to me!

Mrs. Vanessa Hefley, Assistant Principal
I have always known I wanted to be a teacher. Being around children has always brought me joy, and I can’t remember a time when this wasn’t my dream. Educating is not just a career for me—it’s something I’ve always felt called to do.
Outside of school, I enjoy time with my husband and two children. We love cheering on the Clemson Tigers, traveling, and just spending time at home.
Fun Fact: I can juggle, but not more than three objects at time!
